The day the dream of 1968 died
Article Abstract:
Students and workers joined together in protest in France in May 1968, but in fact they had differing ambitions. The student rebellion was cultural and spiritual, while that of the workers was political and economic. It would seem impossible in the social climate of modern France for students and workers to join together in this way again. After the May 1968 revolution, the intellectual Left lost patience with the working class, while the working class moved into the consumerist society rejected by the student rebellion.

'This is the France we want to see: valiant, stubborn and multi-racial.' (impact on France of winning 1998 World Cup)
Article Abstract:
Football has traditionally not been very popular in France, but this has changed with the national team's victory in the 1998 World Cup. Ordinary people of all races and social classes have united to celebrate the victory, and there has been a clear shift away from the anti-national stance of the politically correct intellectual Left. The national mood has been subdued over recent years, but this victory has presented an opportunity to revive French pride.
