The fine line between sense and censorship
Article Abstract:
Newspaper articles are vetted by an in-house lawyer to check for unintentional libel. The Independent has a lawyer on three-month secondments from the firm Oswald Hickson, Collier & Co, which has a media deparment. The lawyer is not a censor but checks that defamatory statements are not included inadvertently. The libel law promotes conscientious journalism with hard facts. The editor assesses the amount of risk of libel proceedings and the importance of publishing the article. The lawyer advises double checking, using a variety of sources and giving the accused the opportunity to respond.

Speaking up for silence
Article Abstract:
The UK government may be forced by the European Court of Human Rights to make changes to the sections of the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act which abolish the right to remain silent under police questioning and in court. Two cases currently being considered by the European Court of Human Rights challenge the withdrawal of this right. The UK police are strongly in favour of removing the right to remain silent, while civil liberties groups believe that taking away the rights of suspects will not affect the causes of crime in any way.
