The situation in Northern Ireland is reviewed in the light of the announcement that Ken Maginnis, a leading Unionist spokesman, is to retire from the House of Commons. The fact that the future of the peace process seems very uncertain is highlighted.

President Bill Clinton's efforts with regard to the peace process in Northern Ireland are discussed. It is argued that Clinton's final visit to Northern Ireland as president will not serve to resolve the remaining areas of conflict.
