Assurance company Standard Life believes that the work of its recruiting team has been greatly eased by the use of the Gallup Automated Telephone Screening Interview. This system, devised by Gallup's parent company in the US, involves the applicant listening to a series of questions with a number of response options. The applicant's response time is calculated along with the answers given. This approach can be valuable as an initial screening for companies which receive very large numbers of applications.

The UK National Union of Students (NUS) is still involved in campaigning on behalf of students, but its activities are much wider than they were in the past. Its leaders are expected to have a wide range of abilities, and this is making them attractive to potential employers. Indeed, a number of the UK's largest employers now specifically target NUS officers in a number of different ways. This is a reflection of the trend towards graduate recruitment programmes becoming much more focused.

Many companies in the UK are finding it hard to attract the most talented people when they are seeking employees, as these people are increasingly prefering consultancy work. They see this as more interesting than working for the same company for a long time, and being freelance allows them to gain wider experience. This is prompting some companies to use more sophisticated marketing techniques, emphasising that they offer high levels of employment flexibility.
