The last of the modernists
Article Abstract:
Avant-garde composer Mauricio Kagel, who was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1931, has never been very well known in the UK. Early in his career, he explored instrumental and electronic music, a reflection of his many different interests. However, he gradually developed a personal form of what he calls 'instrumental theatre,' with players' actions being composed into the musical score. It is often impossible to identify his sources, apart from some of his texts.

The jury's verdict: a special talent
Article Abstract:
The 20 people selected to compete in the 1997 World Piano Competition in London, England, were required to give two recitals, lasting 30 and 40 minutes respectively. A shortlist of eight candidates was then selected for a 50-minute recital. At this stage, each competitor was obliged to include a significant 20th century piece. The winner was Ashley Wass, a pupil of Christopher Elton at the Royal Academy. His serious playing showed great intelligence and maturity.
