The long road to peace: how blood enemies learned to talk
Article Abstract:
History has played a significant role in shaping the views of those attending the peace talks on the future of Northern Ireland. Indeed, the negotiations brought together an extremely wide range of political views, and there is a strong sense that they have initiated a historic new beginning. The purely political parties, apart from Sinn Fein and the loyalists, had been negotiating sporadically since 1991. These early talks did not seem to be very successful, but can now be seen as forming a valuable basis for later progress.

On a Belfast road, a reminder that peace can still be a threat
Article Abstract:
Very large numbers of Orangemen have participated in processions across Northern Ireland to mark the 309th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne. There was no serious conflict associated with these processions, and this has given impetus to attempts by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair to convince the Ulster Unionists that proposed legislation will offer protection against any failure by republicans to give up their weapons. There is now a chance that a new devolved government will be formed very soon.
