The only black candidate in Wales
Article Abstract:
It is important that Wales recognizes its diversity, according to Cherry Short, a Labour candidate for the National Assembly for Wales. She is the only black or Asian candidate competing for one of the 40 first-past-the-post seats in the 60-member assembly. She believes that she can represent both Monmouth, Wales, where she lives, and the wider mixed ethnic communities in Wales. She feels that the economy of Wales, which is based on agriculture, has significant links with that of Jamaica, where she was born.

Where Nye Bevan laid the foundation stones
Article Abstract:
Aneurin Bevan, founder of the UK's National Health Service (NHS), was born in Tredegar, Wales. He based the NHS on the Tredegar Workmen's Medical Aid Society, which was founded in 1870. There will be a number of events in the town to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the NHS. Bevan, one of 10 children, worked underground for the Tredegar Iron & Coal Co, and his involvement with trade unionism led to him being blacklisted. He was a man of great vision, and was not afraid to challenge convention.

Dobson offers 'family friendly' shifts to soothe angry nurses
Article Abstract:
National Health Service (NHS) managers should take steps to ensure that nurses are better treated, according to UK Health Secretary Frank Dobson. This would include offering more flexible working hours, thus allowing nurses to return to work after having children. He is determined to make working for the NHS more attractive, and is consulting with NHS groups on a long-term strategy to introduce a single independent pay review body for the entire NHS.
