The pay's academic
Article Abstract:
There is a significant gap between the salary levels of almost all employees at UK universities and those doing equivalent work in the private sector and the rest of the public sector, according to research undertaken for the Dearing committee by Hay Management Consultants. The Universities and Colleges Employers Association believes that this situation cannot be allowed to continue if standards in higher education are to be maintained. Salary levels have fallen so far behind mainly because of the funding crisis which has gradually cut costs per student.

Warning to boys: don't leave it too late
Article Abstract:
Boys' schools in the UK have expressed concern about reports that top universities are now selecting applicants on the basis of GCSE results, rather than A-levels. The schools point out that boys often mature later than girls, and their performance at GCSE level may therefore not reflect their true abilities. They feel that using GCSE results as a measure of performance means that universities will select conformists, rather than those who have creative talent and are willing to take risks. This approach also ignores future potential.

Who's up, who's down in the fight for applicants
Article Abstract:
The abolition by the UK government of free university tuition has not led to a significant decline in the volume of applications to universities. There has been a fall in the number of applications from people aged over 21, and applications from overseas students are also down. However, some institutions, including Bath University and Thames Valley University, have seen a large rise in applications. Potential students are generally not being attracted to universities in rather remote locations.
