The people the banks forgot
Article Abstract:
Africa saw steady economic growth after the colonial era came to end, but poverty, starvation and infant mortality are now starting to become serious problems again. Almost half of all African children are not growing properly because they lack proper nourishment, and infant mortality is rising. People cannot afford to buy medicines, and school attendance is declining. The cause of these problems is Third World debt, especially structural adjustment programmes, under which poor countries have reduced subsidies on basic foods and taken land from small subsistence farms for large-scale export crops.

Book launch with a difference
Article Abstract:
The new Worship Book produced by the Methodist Church in the UK is partly a response to sociological change, with considerable efforts having been made to use inclusive language and to recognize a wide range of personal circumstances. The Worship Book has attracted some controversy because of a single reference to God as Mother, but those who spent eight years compiling this book do not want it to become known just for this. It is possible that the Worship Book is designed to make reunification with the Church of England easier.

They say it's Europe's richest inner city. Try telling them that in Hackney
Article Abstract:
The City of London has been identified as the wealthiest inner city area in Europe. However, the wealth of this area contrasts strongly with the poverty of other parts of London. These include Hackney, part of the outer London area which earns only one-third of the earnings of inner London. In Lewisham, the avearge gross wage is only 374.10 pounds sterling a week, compared with 749.50 pounds sterling a week in the City of London.
