The pound in your pocket will be worth more tomorrow
Article Abstract:
Mixed views continue to be expressed in the UK about whether the pound is overvalued. The Bank of England appears to believe that this is the case, and presumes that the pound will fall at some point in the near future. The financial markets regard the Bank of England as attempting to talk the pound down. It is only really possible to know within broad parameters what the right rate for the pound is. It is possible that the pound is currently towards the top of the appropriate range, but that the long-term trend should be upwards, rather than down. The pound could remain strong for a long time if the UK remains outside the euro-zone.

More than fashion is driving the surge in sterling
Article Abstract:
There has been a sudden rise in the value of sterling recently, with economic, political and financial factors all playing a role in this trend. Favourable economic figures have encouraged the purchase of sterling, while part of the new strength of sterling is also due to a change in fashion in financial markets, with investors looking at the bond markets of the softer European currencies. Foreign investors also do not share the view of domestic analysts that a switch to a Labour government would have a negative impact on sterling and gilts.

Call it wacky, but sterling is on target for a classic market error
Article Abstract:
Sterling has until recently been regarded as a chronically weak currency, but it is now starting to be seen more positively. Against this background, it is worth considering the possible implications of a stronger pound for UK monetary policy. It is possible that the Bank of England is underestimating the influence of a stronger pound in its concern about inflation. Some observers feel that the strength of the pound will continue, especially if there is a continued recovery in the oil price.
