The time is right for a velvet divorce
Article Abstract:
The Conservative party does not seem to have a common approach to the issue of independent government for Scotland and Northern Ireland. Prime minister John Major recently emphasised the advantages of maintaining the United Kingdom, calling on his party to defend it. However, cabinet minister Malcolm Rifkind then took a different approach, stating that he supported Scottish ambitions for devolution. His views are probably more in line with those of ordinary people, who do not believe that any harm would result from some kind of home rule for Scotland.

In the Commons and on the make
Article Abstract:
The recent death of former prime minister Harold Wilson has highlighted the differences between today's politicians and those of the Wilson era. In the days of Harold Wilson, political scandals were only hinted at, and Wilson himself, although coming under suspicion at certain times, was never involved in any scandals. He was in fact not at all wealthy, and lived the final years of his life in relative poverty. In contrast, today's politicians are constantly involved in scandals, and there is a strong culture of self-enrichment in political life.

Ancient art, but what does it mean?
Article Abstract:
American scholar Joan Connelly has attracted considerable attention with her reinterpretation of the events in the Parthenon frieze. She believes that a figure identified at E35 in a recent book showing as complete a version as possible of the frieze is female, not male as had always been thought. If this is the case, then the frieze depicts a mythological event, namely Erechtheus, the king of Athens, giving his youngest daughter, E35, or Otionia, her sacrifical shroud, as she was to be sacrificed to Athena.
