Issues raised by attempts by the UK Conservative party to move away from a fixed ideology are discussed. It is argued that having ideological commitment is extremely important.

UK Conservative party leader William Hague continues to face challenges from Michael Portillo, with Portillo having refused to repeat comments made in autumn 2000 about not wishing to lead the party. Portillo's supporters should now back down in order to protect the future of the party as a whole.
