Tough on liberty
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party alienated many young people by failing to openly oppose the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act. The party seems to be increasingly listening to only a very narrow section of the population on the issue of law and order. In the case of criminal justice, for example, it is being most influenced by the Association of Chief Police Officers. It is clearly keen to placate the police, as shown in its handling of the Criminal Procedure and Investigation Bill, introduced in Dec 1995. A future Labour government may risk contravening the European Convention on Human Rights.

Cold comfort for victims of injustice
Article Abstract:
There are already very mixed views being expressed about the Criminal Cases Review Commission, which is due to begin operating later in 1996 and aims to help the innocent in jail in the UK. Its supporters believe that it will play a role in reforming the criminal justice system, while its critics feel that it could actually create further difficulties. There is particular concern about the involvement of the police with this new body, as critics feel that there should be independent investigation of alleged cases of miscarriage of justice.

'There are times when I wish I was back in jail.' (problems facing innocent prisoners after their release)
Article Abstract:
Innocent people who are wrongly imprisoned long to be released, but they can actually face more serious problems after their release than when they were in prison. They can have particular problems with obtaining an identity, and this can in turn make it hard for them to open a bank account or obtain a passport. This contrast strongly with the position of released convicted prisoners, who are entitled to a range of support services.
