Article Abstract:
Collaboration with visual artists and musicians can be very valuable to the choreographer, according to Rosemary Butcher. This approach allows dances to develop into a complete experience, which is often dramatic. She has become highly regarded for her innovative approach to choreography, especially the way in which she allows the dancers to determine the course of the dance to a greater or lesser extent. She is unlikely ever to appeal greatly to the general public, but has been very influential in British dance.

Dreams of leaving
Article Abstract:
Nederlands Dans Theater Artistic Director Jiri Kylian is grateful for the encouragement he received from the Stuttgart Ballet's John Cranko, but does not feel that he has modelled his policies on those of Cranko. He has chosen to explain his policies at company meetings, but otherwise remains at a distance, apart from the times when he is working on his ballets. He feels that it is only possible to learn how to choreograph or how to direct a dance company by actually undertaking the work.

In the footsteps of Forsythe
Article Abstract:
Dancing is extremely enjoyable, according to choreographer William Forsythe. He does not believe that there is any need to be very serious about dancing, as dancing should bring a great deal of delight. He works very closely with dancers, and allows them to contribute to his material. In certain cases, he ensures that dancers get paid for their contribution. He tends to write himself out of the process, but he is still responsible for instigating new works.
