Trainers go to the back of the class
Article Abstract:
A new research report, 'The University and the Teachers in France, the United States and England,' blames teacher educators for the attacks on teacher education in the UK which prompted the government to move teacher education away from universities and into schools. It states that the backgrounds of teacher education in the 1960s were not properly matched to the requirements of schools, with teacher educators not being sufficiently familiar with the classroom environment. It concludes that education may never be fully accepted as a mainstream university subject.

The class ceiling
Article Abstract:
Students from a working-class background continue to account for only a small proportion of the total student population in the UK. The conversion of polytechnics into universities has done little to improve this situation, as these institutions tend to accept more mature students and part-time students than traditional universities. However, higher education is now drawing students from a wider social spectrum, and some universities are making deliberate attempts to attract people from groups where access to higher education has traditionally been limited.

Will dons make the grade in class?
Article Abstract:
Moves by the government to partly base university funding on teaching quality have prompted universities to focus more on academics' teaching abilities. Assessors now closely examine all aspects of academics' work, and this has caused protest from some universities, particularly the more traditional ones, which see assessment by outsiders as an infringment of academic freedom.
