UK: BA ABOLISHES TRAVEL AGENTS' COMMISSION
Article Abstract:
The 7% commission conventionally paid to travel agents for the sale of British Airways (BA) tickets is to be abolished by the airline. It is thought that tickets will now be supplied for a fixed price, leaving the agents free to add their own mark-ups. The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) expressed its disappointment at the move, indicating that agents would probably copy the US practice of introducing fees for their services to compensate for the loss of income. The new strategy from BA could save the company significant administrative costs, although it has not confirmed what will replace the commission scheme.

Britons shun millennium holiday deals
Article Abstract:
The high cost of millennium holidays is deterring British consumers, and a number of holiday companies report that prices are dropping and bookings are low. Airlines and hotels have sought to charge too much according to a tour operator, who reports a 50% drop in bookings for the millennium, though winter bookings for other times have risen. Travelers are also concerned about the possible impact of the year 2000 computer adjustment problem. Travelers may be best advised to wait in order to obtain bargains.
