UK: BNFL FAIL GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENT
Article Abstract:
British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) has not yet fulfilled a main requirement of the Government's regulatory watchdog, which would mean that Sellafield in Cumbria could be re-opened. The Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) remain unconvinced that BNFL has done everything possible in order to meet the final recommendation of a report covering the falsification of safety data. It is recommendation 15 that remains unanswered; as to why senior management allowed the situation to develop and why this information was not passed on to NII inspectors when the data falsification first became apparent. BNFL does not intend to reopen Sellafield as a production site, but for research and development. However, it still needs the permission of the NII to do so.
