UK: RISE IN CANCER CASES
Article Abstract:
The number of new cancers identified in the UK rose to 221,000 in 1997 from 149,000 in 1971, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Doctors cannot explain the reasons for what is a 72,000 per year rise in cases, which puts the UK government's target to cut cancer-related fatalities among under 75s by 2010 by 100,000 in jeopardy. Better data collection and an ageing population can be cited but what is causing consternation is the increase in cancer among men and women since 1971 of 20% and 30% respectively. The number of people dying from cancer totalled 133,000 in 1999, compared with 116,000 in 1971, with breast cancer-related fatalities down by 20% over the past ten years due in part to screening.

UK: CANCER SPECIALISTS DOUBT VALUE OF TESTS
Article Abstract:
Two cancer specialists have cast doubt on the value of the breast cancer-screening programme. Professor Michael Baum and Jeffrey Tobias said switching funds from screening into treatments would give the National Health Service better value for money. They claim that advances in treatment have been 200 times greater than advances in screening. The breast-screening program saves 1 woman in 2,000 who are screened while treatment saves 100 women out of every 1,000 treated. Dr Roger Blanks of the Institute for Cancer Research concluded that the screening program had cut the death rate from breast cancer by 6.4% since 1990.
