UK: EXPANSION FOR TESCO HOME SHOPPING VENTURE
Article Abstract:
With 48,000 customers and annualised sales of GB[pound] 200mn, the Internet shopping venture of UK supermarket chain Tesco is to speed up its expansion programme to provide nationwide coverage by end-August 2000. The Tesco.com service will be available through 240 stores to reach the sales target of GB[pound] 300mn per year. In addition, Tesco is planning to launch the online venture in South Korea, where it already has two stores, due to the high population density and Internet usage rates. Tesco is extending its share of the UK grocery market, with 15.6% for the 12 months to December 1999, up from 15.2% a year earlier, while J Sainsbury fell to 11.8% from 12.2% and Asda rose to 8.9% from 8.5%, according to the Institute of Grocery Distribution. Sainsbury's own online venture, relaunched under the name Sainsburystoyou, is said to be performing well, and is expected to cover 60% of the UK by March 2001.
