UK: DECLINE IN DOMAIN NAME REGISTRATIONS
Article Abstract:
The number of new Internet domain names registered in the UK totalled 151,248 in May 2000, compared with April 2000's 190,907 and the March 2000 peak of 245,967, according to Nominet.uk, with a number of reasons cited as contributory factors. Since March 2000, Internet stock market valuations have declined while the rush of start-up businesses has been curtailed by the early interest in technology investment diminishing. Another factor is that Nominet.uk registers domain names ending in dot.uk, a suffix that is losing out to the greater international appeal of dot.com.

Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom Data Protection Act will not be enforced until the start of 1999, and brings in new rules which harmonize European data protection laws. The scope of UK law is widened, compared to the original UK legislation of 1984. Some paper records, as well as digital records are covered by the act. The aim is both to strengthen individual privacy, and to facilitate European trade through standardization of regulations. Some newer industries may be unaware of their obligations in terms of the act.
