UK: DECLINE IN FARMING INCOMES IN 1999
Article Abstract:
UK farming incomes declined in 1999 by 16% compared with the year earlier, due primarily to the pound's strength against the single European currency, according to the Farm Business Survey released on 31 January 2000. Farming output was worth GB[pound] 16bn in 1999, compared with GB[pound] 20bn in 1996, with pig farming impacted the most. The National Farmers' Union (NFU) revealed that over the 12 months to June 1999, over 22,000 people left the farming industry, with around the same number expected to quit by summer 2000. The NFU cited the fact that farm support payments across the European Union are denominated in euros as a contributory factor. Farmers will be informed by Prime Minister, Tony Blair, on 1 February 2000 that any government aid will be severely constrained and that to survive, farmers have to branch out into other areas.

UK: FARMING PRACTICES AFFECT THRUSH POPULATION
Article Abstract:
According to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), intensive farming practices are contributing to a decline in the UK's thrush population. It is thought that, in agricultural areas with intensive farming, the availability of snails and slugs is reduced while the decline in hedgerows cuts back the supply of berries, which sustain the birds during the winter. The draining of formerly damp land for farming is exacerbating the problem, creating a hostile environment for the birds. Their numbers are thought to have halved over a period of 30 years.
