'Damage to the quality of football.'
Article Abstract:
The decision by the UK Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) to block British Sky Broadcasting's (BSkyB) planned purchase of Manchester United football club could have significant repercussions for the future ownership of football clubs. It appears that no broadcaster will be permitted to purchase a Premier League football club in the future. The MMC was particularly concerned that the deal would have given BSkyB more power in its negotiations with the Premier League, especially in altering the timing of matches to fit in with its television schedule.

Severe setback for media empire
Article Abstract:
The monopoly over pay television in the UK currently held by Rupert Murdoch's media empire may be threatened by the government's rejection of British Sky Broadcasting's bid for Manchester United football club. This development will make it extremely difficult for Murdoch to fulfill his ambition of dominating the future of football in the UK. Mixed views are being expressed about whether Murdoch will simply accept the decision of the Monopolies and Mergers Commission or seek revenge against Prime Minister Tony Blair, whom he has previously supported.
