UK: INQUIRY INTO SAFETY OF CAR AIRBAGS
Article Abstract:
The UK government is launching an inquiry into the safety of car airbags after two British women were killed by the devices. The study will try and examine the difference seatbelts make when airbags are deployed in a crash. The British experience of airbags is minimal because it's not compulsory for manufacturers to fit them. Evidence at the inquests of the dead women indicated that sitting close to the steering wheel may be why they died. The impact of an airbag expanding can be dangerous for people who sit very close to the wheel, which contains the airbag. The Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions say there is no equate information about whether airbags contributed to deaths. In Europe airbags are fitted to 20% of the continent's 22mn cars.
