UK: INQUIRY SAYS BSE DIFFERENT TO SHEEP SCRAPIE
Article Abstract:
The Phillips inquiry into the BSE epidemic has rejected that it was in effect sheep scrapie in cattle. It believes that BSE is a new and more potent disease than scrapie. The current view is that infectious proteins or prions caused the disease and that they can come about through spontaneous mutations. A mutation could have occurred as long ago as the Seventies. The infectious agent causing BSE can survive temperatures that normally kill typical microbes and viruses. The inquiry accepted that the epidemic was amplified by the rendering of affected cattle carcasses into cattle feed.

UK: FERTILITY TREATMENTS ARE MORE SUCCESSFUL
Article Abstract:
According to figures from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, couples using fertility treatment have a 30% greater chance of having a healthy baby, compared to just 14% at the start of the 1990s. In 1998, over 26,685 women underwent IVF treatments in UK clinics, resulting in the birth of 4,138 single babies, 1,441 pairs of twins and 176 sets of triplets. The success can be attributed to advances in test-tube baby treatments, especially they introduction of Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection in 1993.
