UK: BIDS FOR MOBILE LICENCES CONTINUE
Article Abstract:
The 145th round of bidding for the five third generation mobile phone licences saw a GB[pound] 5.96bn bid on 19 April 2000 by Vodafone AirTouch for licence B. Licence B provides the widest spectrum to a current mobile operator and Vodafone's move succeeded in fending off British Telecom, which instead made a GB[pound] 3.9bn bid for licence D. Overall bids for the licences now exceed GB[pound] 22.2bn, with the next round on 25 April 2000.

EU: FEAR OVER IMPACT OF UTMS LICENCES
Article Abstract:
The high prices being paid for third-generation (UTMS) mobile phone licences could prove a problem as telecoms operators across Europe strive to spend money on new infrastructure and services, believes the continent's leading telecoms policy official. Germany and the Netherlands are looking to embark on licence auctions in summer 2000, with Portugal and Italy looking to carry out fixed-fee allocations. However, Mr Liikanen believes that the GB[pound] 22.5bn paid for the five UK licences has heightened expectations, saying that the European economy may benefit if these were not met.
