UK: MORE BNFL IRREGULARITIES FOUND BY INSPECTORS
Article Abstract:
British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) came under renewed pressure 2 March 2000 when the Swiss nuclear watchdog, HSK, uncovered more safety irregularities. HSK visited BNFL and found that computer data was missing and specifications for mixed oxides of plutonium and uranium fuel bound for a nuclear reactor in Switzerland were incorrect. Although HSK said the data supplied did not compromise safety, it stated that poor working practices or incompetence resulted in the anomalies.

UK: BNFL FUEL COULD BE RETURNED FROM JAPAN
Article Abstract:
British Nuclear Fuels' (BNFL) mixed oxide (Mox) fuel could be returned to the UK from Japan, according to a document listing the available options for dealing with the controversial shipment. Japan had threatened to terminate its deal with BNFL if the UK declined to accept the Mox delivery back, a move which could have led to its Sellafield plant being shut down. The UK is known to favour the fuel remaining in Japan with additional safeguards. Returning the fuel to the UK may require US Congressional clearance since the Mox had its origins in the US.
