UK: SPECIAL HOSPITAL WARDS PLANNED FOR ELDERLY
Article Abstract:
The UK government will reveal plans for an after-care service to free hospital beds in wards suffering with serious over-subscription by creating special facilities for elderly patients. The so-called granny wards would be created partly via the use of non-acute wards within existing hospitals and through the creation of purpose-built facilities to provide enhanced out-patient care for the elderly. However, the Secretary of State for Health, Alan Milburn, has sparked controversy by revealing that the Private Finance Initiative and National Lottery would be used to finance part of the initiative. The National Lottery's original aim was to finance good causes rather than subsidise initiatives which use taxpayers' money.

UK: GOVERNMENT PLANS NHS CASH INJECTION
Article Abstract:
The UK government is planning to pump a massive sum into the National Health Service (NHS) in a move to take effect in April 2000 which will raise the next financial year's GB[pound] 42bn budget. The two-phase move is intended to fulfil the government's pledge to reduce waiting lists. Chancellor, Gordon Brown, will publish a government spending review in July 2000 for the three financial years from 2001-2002 which will include an NHS allocation running into billions of pounds. Mr Brown will claim that the additional money can be afforded as government tax revenues have been boosted by solid economic growth.
