UK: BBC REVEALS INTERNET STRATEGY

Budding partners are being sought by the BBC for its commercial Internet unit, Beeb.com, with leading ITV business, Granada Media, believed to be on the UK broadcasting group's shortlist, with an agreement possibly being concluded by end-May 2000. More than GB[pound] 100mn in funding is being sought by the BBC for the unit, with the partner obtaining a 30%-50% stake in Beeb.com in return. Beeb.com's aim will be to capitalise on the e-commerce potential being produced by Internet users accessing its online content. The BBC would keep editorial control over the planned joint venture, which would operate via partnerships worldwide with portal operators and Internet service providers.

UK: ENERGIS AND 365 CORP SIGN DEAL

Energis and 365 Corp revealed an agreement on 29 June 2000 that will entail the delivery to small and mid-sized firms of data services via the former's broadband network. 365, which offers Internet content and telecoms services, now has 11 joint ventures in the telecoms service reselling market. 365 will provide applications and solutions related to the Internet using its Symphony Telecom brand. 365 finance director, Martin Turner, noted that margins in the data services and access sector were solid and that it is well placed to offer more complex data services to firms with more intricate requirements.

UK-based travel agent, Thomas Cook, has joined Energis Travel Network, the new extranet being created by telecoms business, Energis. The new service may reduce travel industry costs by over GB[pound] 15mn per year. The service offers booking and holiday information via the Internet for a flat fee and Eurostar, Lunn Poly and Virgin Atlantic have already joined up.
