Ulster may yet prove the triumph of politics over tribal feeling
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern remain optimistic about the prospects for reaching a peace agreement in Northern Ireland, even though no specific progress has yet been made. This optimism is partly based on the fact that Sinn Fein, although remaining opposed to decommissioning as a pre-condition of the Northern Irish assembly, has not rejected the new joint 'working draft.' The Good Friday agreement remains in place, and Sinn Fein leaders Martin McGuinness and Gerry Adams seem strongly committed to the peace process.
