The number of graduate vacancies at City of London firms is beginning to rise again, but these positions are being increasingly filled by graduates from abroad. There is now a much more global approach to recruitment as client bases expand. Firms are seeking to create a workforce which reflects their client profile, and are also looking for people who will be enthusiastic about the prospect of a single European currency.

Business travel can be extremely expensive and time-consuming, and this is prompting many companies to make use of new communications technology which reduces the need to travel. The Internet is playing a particularly significant role in this development, allowing almost instant transfer of information between computers across the world. Many companies are now also using electronic mail and electronic conferencing.
