Article Abstract:

The meaning of Picasso's painting entitled 'Guernica' is very hard to grasp. The work is enigmatic, and seems to have little direct connection with the Nazi bombing of Guernica, Spain, in Apr 1937. Picasso was very unwilling to spell out the meaning of his works, and this painting in particular has caused considerable controversy among art historians for many years. It is widely seen as protest against war in open, universal terms, but could also have connections with the Siege of Numancia, which took place in 133 BC.

Article Abstract:

The UK saw itself as being in a strong position after the second world war, having resisted occuption by Nazi forces and having avoided the social problems which resulted from collaboration in continental Europe. However, this self-congratulatory attitude prompted a false sense of security, and no effort was made to reshape the UK as an industrial society. Indeed, the most powerful forces in society, such as the trade unions, remained extremely resistant to change.

Uganda strikes first victory against Aids

Article Abstract:

There have been almost 500,000 deaths from Aids in Uganda since the early 1980s, but there are now indications that the rise in the death rate may be slowing down. Young people are now much more aware of the risk of contracting Aids, and are not unwilling to take the necessary precautions. The government has run a wide-reaching public awareness campaign, and this makes Uganda the first African country where such an approach has been successful.
