Visions of the apocalypse
Article Abstract:
The National Gallery has recently purchased 'St. Jerome in the Wilderness,' its first oil painting by Albrecht Durer. This was the last remaining oil painting by Durer to be privately owned, and is the first to be acquired by a British museum. It has an extremely intimate quality, and was probably painted for private devotional use. It is one of a number of paintings by German artists purchased by the National Gallery over recent years.

Thrown on the scrapheap
Article Abstract:
The Chisenhale Gallery in London, England, is currently devoting a room to 'Scrapheap Services,' a tableau by Michael Landy. This is based on theme of redundancy, and involves the floor being littered with many tiny figures made from pieces of rubbish. These are periodically collected by a mannequin. Some observers have interpreted this as a satirical piece, but it is in fact too obsessive and overwrought to be satirical.
