Vladimir Macura
Article Abstract:
Writer and translator Vladimir Macura studied Czech and English at Prague University, Czech Republic, gaining his BA in 1968 and a PhD in 1969. He became post-doctoral assistant at the Institute of Czech Literature, gaining a permanent position in 1971. He co-founded the illicit cultural organization the Baltic Union in 1974. He taught himself Estonian, and by 1977 was translating prose, verse and drama into Czech. He published literary critical and theoretical essays during the second half of the 1970s and the 1980s. After the collapse of Communist rule, he gained recognition as an analyst of Czech national mythology.

Sebastian Haffner
Article Abstract:
Writer and journalist Sebastian Haffner studied law while working for the German press in the late 1920s. He left Germany for the UK because of his democratic views and links with Jews, and during the second world war worked for the Foreign Office on anti-Nazi propaganda. He became correspondent for The Observer in Berlin, Germany, in 1954, and later wrote for a range of German publications. He also gained respect as a writer on historical issues.
