WORLD: FORD CHAIRMAN'S DRAMATIC PREDICTION
Article Abstract:
The hydrogen fuel cell will replace the internal combustion engine in cars, predicted Ford Motor's chairman on 5 October 2000. Speaking at the Greenpeace Business Conference in London, Bill Ford acknowledged that the car had adversely impacted the environment and that the car manufacturing arena had played down the global warming threat. A fuel cell is able to use an electrochemical process to create energy and is able to cut the accumulation of greenhouse gases as it produces no pollution. All the leading car makers have created fuel cell car prototypes, with Ford alone looking to devote US$ 1bn developing the technology through to 2004.

Never mind the heat, just pump in methanol
Article Abstract:
Car manufacturers are becoming increasingly aware of the need to take account of environmental issues when designing new models. A key area of research for companies seeking to make their cars more environmentally-friendly is the fuel cell. Mercedes-Benz has been a pioneer in this area, and has linked with Canadian fuel cell concern Ballard to develop fuel cell buses. It is now working with Ford on further fuel cell research and development. Similar developments are taking place at a number of Japanese car manufacturers.
