WORLD: KPMG SURVEY OF Y2K PROBLEMS
Article Abstract:
The number of Y2K problems may reach a peak over the coming few months, according to a study by KPMG which noted that the 1999/2000 date change resulted in over 100 major failures. Banks say that 29 February 2000 could result in more difficulties than the initial rollover since 2000 is a leap year and certain calendar software may be unable to recognise this fact. The Y2K bug impacted nuclear facilities, traffic lights and military spy satellite processing operations, with 67 of the incidents occurring in the first week of 2000. In the UK, 5% of firms noted that computer systems were negatively impacted in some way by the date change, according to an Office of National Statistics survey.
