WORLD: LECTINS MAY PREVENT CANCER
Article Abstract:
The proteins called lectins, which present in plants and legumes are poised to be cited as the latest hope to prevent cancer. Research, which will be released later in 2000, will state that the proteins play a crucial part on reducing or stimulating the unrestrained cell growth, which is the indicator of a malignant disease. Research released in 1999 by Hammersmith Hospital's Professor John Calam revealed that growth in colon cancer cells was reduced and the cancer process halted by lectins found in mushrooms and broad beans. Raspberries and tomatoes are also said to contain lectins offering a defence against disease while peanuts contained a lectin, which increased the pace of cell-division.

US: FEAR OVER TRAIL ANTI-CANCER DRUG
Article Abstract:
The Trail anti-cancer treatment causes liver failure, according to scientists headed by the University of Pittsburgh's Dr Stephen Strom. The experimental treatment had been regarded as a breakthrough owing to its ability to destroy only cancerous cells and not harm normal cells. However, scientists revealed that over 60 human liver cells exposed to the drug were destroyed inside ten hours during laboratory tests.

WORLD: OLIVE OIL PREVENTS SKIN CANCER?
Article Abstract:
New research claims that skin cancer can be prevented by using olive oil on the skin following a period in the sun, although there are fears that people may dismiss the potentially damaging impact of ultra violet radiation (UVR). Scientists at the Japan-based Kobe University School of Medicine made the claim following tests using genetically engineered mice in which some were treated with olive oil and others left untreated. They found that tumours started to appear on the untreated mice placed under sunlamps over a three-week period, while it took another six weeks for the treated mice to show indications of the disease. Virgin olive oil contains antioxidants which mop up chemicals known as free radicals that emerge when UVR comes into contact with a cell. However, olive oil is not able to stop ultra-violet rays from penetrating the skin and cannot be classed as a sunscreen.
