WORLD: SOIL LINK TO GLOBAL WARMING DILEMMA
Article Abstract:
US plans to use farm soils to soak up airborne carbon dioxide as a way of dealing with global warming were agreed early in December 2000 by the Kyoto Protocol on climate change. Ohio State University's Professor Rattan Lal believes that soils can prevent much of the annual rise in CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. Around 100mn tonnes of carbon has been lost as a result of farming methods, much of it over the past century, and Prof Lal believes that improvements could lead to soil absorbing CO2 equal to fossil fuel burning emissions covering 15 years. Ploughing is the main reason why so much carbon has been lost by the soil because the oxygen rots carboniferous organic matter such as crop residues.
