Cider pubs, although popular with drinkers are disliked by the brewing companies who own them. Cider pubs in Bristol sell 'rough' cider, an opaque strong drink attractive to working class men. The pubs do not make much profit from any commercial lines that they sell and do not convey an acceptable image for the brewery owners who would like to close them down. There is strong opposition from locals and Apple, the cider arm of the Campaign for Real Ale

Glasgow University undertook a 90,000 pounds sterling survey on public opinion about censorship and government control of the press. Interviews between Nov 1991 and Aug 1992 suggested that 75% oppose it and that politicians are more liberal than the general public. Interviewees were least tolerant of lies and distortions of the truth. They considered that citizens' rights and liberties were defended well by television and the quality press.
