What of the unsung hero?
Article Abstract:
The unveiling of a statue of 'Bomber' Harris in London on May 31 1992 should be countered by a celebration of George Bell, Bishop of Chichester from 1929, who courageously opposed government war policy. During the Second World War German defences led to strategic bombing offences and by Feb 1942 Bomber Command was ordered to bomb town centres. This was considered acceptable by many in view of Hitler's cruel acts. George Bell campaigned alone to set limits to war policies and criticised the governments's strategy. On Feb 9 1944 he spoke in the House of Lords, pointing out the flaws, inconsistencies and immorality in the bombing policy.

No thought for human indignity
Article Abstract:
Economists no longer attempt to formulate policy which will produce full employment. The role of the government, the EC, employers and trade unions and the education system in attaining full employment should be discussed. The unemployed feel despair and have a daily struggle to get up. Their lack of money prevents them from socializing, so they inevitably spend a lot of time alone at home watching television. They become demoralised and family relationships are threatened.

Poverty, but not as you know it, Roy
Article Abstract:
The notion of an anti-poverty strategy for the Labour party put forward by former deputy leader Roy Hattersley is well-meaning, but not at all practical. He believes that the party should place renewed emphasis on the needs of the disadvantaged and dispossessed, mainly through tackling poverty. The party certainly needs to tackle poverty, but in a way which looks to the future, not one which draws heavily on the past.
