What's hot, what's not in dietary supplements
Article Abstract:
A survey by Nature's Bounty Inc showed that vitamin E is the best selling product among its 1,500 dietary supplements for the period from Oct to Dec 1998. The increasing popularity of vitamin E is mainly attributed to reports from medical establishments and the American Heart Assn, indicating the vitamin's ability to prevent heart disease. Other studies have also indicated that vitamin E helps in preventing prostate cancer in men, Alzheimer's disease and kidney disease. The company's other top selling products are vitamin C, Ginkgo biloba and calcium with vitamin D.

Wal-Mart policy angers state execs: discounter's decision to stop paying R.Ph. membership dues draws criticism
Article Abstract:
The decision by Wal-Mart to stop paying half of its pharmacists' state association membership dues has raised criticisms among state pharmacy association executives. Wal-Mart's policy was prompted by associations' proposed changes that it disapproves, including the practice of punishing pharmacists for an unintentional prescription error and the issue of technician ratios. Association leaders claim that the policy disadvantages Wal-Mart pharmacy employees.

Antibiotic overuse & misuse linked to bacterial resistance
Article Abstract:
Evidence is mounting that antibiotics are apparently losing their potency because of misuse or overuse. This is leading to increased bacterial resistance and, consequently, mounting incidents of serious and, sometimes, deadly infections. For example, statistics by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that resistant bacterial strains are the primary cause of recurrent ear infections which so many children are experiencing.
