Motor industry analyst and professor Garel Rhys predicts annual automobile sales for 1992 of 1.64 million if August new registration plates sell as expected. Professor Rhys, head of the economics department at Cardiff Business School and director of the Centre for Automotive Industry Research, explains the reasons for Britain's failing automobile industry. Specialised firms are more successful than large car manufacturers in Britain.

Rod Mansfield, the new managing director of Lotus, retired at the end of 1993, but was persuaded to join the company after seeing the Lotus Elise sports car. He was very attracted by the technology being used at Lotus, and believes that the Elise will have a very positive impact on the company's image. He also sees great potential in the turbocharged, 3.5-litre V8 engine which is to be launched in 1996.
