Where the monarchy leads, will the Government dare to follow?
Article Abstract:
There are indications that the royal family is coming to terms with Scottish devolution more readily than the UK government. The royal family has taken expert advice on the likely consequences for the monarchy of Scottish devolution, and efforts are being made to ensure that devolution will revive the role of the royal family as the key symbolic expression of unity within a devolved framework. In contrast, the government continues to pretend to be unaware of the potential for the Scottish National Party to emerge as the leading party in Scotland.

Why do politicians never resign for the right reasons?
Article Abstract:
There is no clear understanding in the UK of exactly when politicians should resign. In most cases, a politician's decision to resign is more closely connected with his or her general standing than with what has actually happened. It is not reasonable to expect politicians to live by different standards from those which apply to the rest of society, and ordinary people are much more tolerant of politicians' transgressions than journalists or the political establishment. In most cases, politicians do not resign for the right reasons.
