Where there's a will
Article Abstract:
Sir Richard Eyre's report on the future of ballet and opera in London, England, does not seem to have been considered in great detail by Secretary of State for Culture Chris Smith. The report presents detailed proposals for Covent Garden, the Coliseum and Sadler's Wells, London's three main lyric theatres, but media and government attention has focused on the Royal Opera House and the Royal Opera company. Smith has approved the closure of the Royal Opera, and possibly the Royal Ballet too, for a year, while no steps have been taken to assist Sadler's Wells or the Coliseum.

Decades of dancing on a piece of paper
Article Abstract:
It is important to challenge ideas about what dance can be, according to Val Bourne, who organized the first Umbrella Dance Festival in London, England, in 1978 and continues to organize this event. She believes that there are now around 300 modern dance groups in the UK, although there were only a small number when the festival began. She feels that the opportunity to perform each year was extremely beneficial for her and other developing British artists.
