While the Tories bicker, politics is changing shape
Article Abstract:
The current battle for the leadership of the UK Conservative party seems to highlight the extent to which key figures in the party are still unaware of the scale of its defeat. The serious disunity in the party is bringing considerable benefits for Prime Minister Tony Blair as his administration begins to face significant challenges. It seems very unlikely that there will be a unified, effective opposition in the foreseeable future, leaving the way clear for the Blairite project to dramatically change the nature of politics in the UK.

Voters try to smoke out New Labour
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party is still a long way ahead of the Conservative party in the opinion polls in the run-up to the forthcoming general election. However, signs are beginning to emerge that its position is not as secure as was widely believed. The party is being increasingly criticised for changing its policies and becoming like the Conservative party. It has been too hesitant about emphasising its distinctiveness from the Conservative party, and seems to be trapped by its own opinion poll lead.
