Article Abstract:
The student loan scheme which UK universities are now recommending appears to offer considerable benefits. The universities claim that it would ensure that they receive more funds, thus allowing them to increase staff salaries, while students would receive a larger contribution to their living expenses. It would be an income-contingent scheme, as repayments would only be required from graduates whose incomes were above a certain level. However, there are a number of disadvantages with the scheme, including the cost of default and the cost of operating it.

Why I am quitting as head of the LSE
Article Abstract:
Continued reductions in funding are putting the very future of the university system in the UK at risk, according to John Ashworth, who has felt moved to resign as director of the London School of Economics (LSE). Reducing student numbers will not help to overcome this problem, as young people should not be denied access to higher education. It is now vital to ensure that there is appropriate funding to support the continued expansion in university places.
