Why Ulster's Protestants are unhappy with Mo Mowlam
Article Abstract:
Northern Ireland's Protestants believe that the UK government is favouring nationalism and republicanism as it seeks to prevent the collapse of the peace process. The UK and Irish governments believe that the negotiations should be as inclusive as possible, and also feel that support should be given to the IRA and loyalist ceasefires. Such developments are generally supported with a certain reluctance by Republicans. However, Unionists regard them as a blow to their community. The main problem currently facing Unionists is a lack of a clear vision.

Protestants haunted by British withdrawal
Article Abstract:
The lives of Ulster businessmen avoid the violence and politics and are contemptuous of unionist politicians. Some feel that direct rule is good for business but others believe in the possibility of improvement. A trend towards cross border trade may have implications. The talks need to produce north-south connections and power sharing between Catholics and Protestants to be acceptable to nationalists. This would be well received by the Protestant business community.

The men behind the wire
Article Abstract:
The opening day of peace talks in Northern Ireland was clouded by the negative impact of publicity-seeking by both republicans and loyalists. Democratic Unionist leader Ian Paisley gained considerable attention for refusing to accept former US Senator George Mitchell as chairman of the talks, and there was then considerable conflict over the agenda. A Sinn Fein delegation headed by Gerry Adams also gained publicity by demanding entry to the talks.
