YUGOSLAVIA: NEW PRIME MINISTER NAMED

Zoran Zizic has been named as Prime Minister of Yugoslavia. The appointment was followed by Miroljub Labus as Deputy Prime Minister and Goran Svilanovic as Foreign Minister. Prime Minister Zizic said that he aimed to follow the reformist programme of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS), including drafting legislation in line with European Union legislation as well as reforming relations with international institutions.

ISRAEL: GENERAL ELECTION CALLED

Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Barak, called a General Election in a surprise announcement on 28 November 2000. Mr Barak has only been in office for a year and a half but has come under pressure recently over his handing of the peace process. He will discuss the election date with other parties, with Likud recommending May 2001.

Jovanka Broz, widow of former Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito, has been under a form of house arrest in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, since 1977. The new government has announced that she is now to be set free.
