Yeltsin to throw Kozyrev to the nationalist wolves
Article Abstract:
Russian president Boris Yeltsin is coming under increasing pressure from nationalist forces and other hardliners, and this has forced him to promise to dismiss foreign secretary Andrei Kozyrev, who is seen by the nationalists as having made too many compromises with the west. It is clear that Yeltsin hopes to boost his own popularity by removing the increasingly unpopular Kozyrev. It is reported that Kozyrev has clashed with other ministers and that he has been unwilling to coordinate his policy with the government.

After Yeltsin: how will Russia react?
Article Abstract:
Russian president Boris Yeltsin may be unable to return to politics after his current bout of ill health. Even if he does so, he will be under very strong pressure to resign, or at least to unofficially select a successor. He is now seen as physically and politically weak, and has lost the support of many ordinary voters. This is in turn allowing the Communists and nationalists to become more powerful.

Yeltsin and Zyuganov vie for holy vote
Article Abstract:
There is strong competition between Russian presidential candidates Boris Yeltsin and Gennady Zyuganov to gain the support of the Orthodox Church, which has enjoyed considerable freedom over recent years. Some members of the clergy support Zyuganov's Communists, but most favour Yeltsin. The Church has become extremely influential, with regular attendance now very fashionable.
