Japan's 6,529-ft, or 2.43-mi, Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is the world's longest suspension bridge, which will open on April 1998. It connects the mainland of Honshu to the island of Awaji. It was tested on seismic shocks and can survive earthquake that measures up to 8.5 in the Richter scale.
