Oceanographers believe that the chimney-like pillars called black smokers found beneath the North Pacific Ocean may hold the secret to the origins of life on Earth. The pillars are formed when super-hot waters seeping out of cracks in the ocean floor mix with the freezing waters of the Pacific.
